Spring Waterscape Prep Plan
Whether you're an OG or a newbie to water gardening, it's always great to be reminded of how to kick off Spring! Truly, you know you’re an Oregonian when one of your main conversation topics is the weather. Ha-ha! This has been another glorious long winter of sunny, snowy, rainy days and steady, cold evenings. For all of us who are super pumped to jump into gardening, it’s been incredibly mean. The main point to consider here is when to feed those fish and when to plant those “blooming” plants. The first answer is that when the water temperature reaches 50 degrees, it’s officially safe to start feeding your outdoor koi and goldfish. If your fish are indoors, then forget about that. As for blooming plants, “Papa always said to be safe: don’t plant anything you love (that blooms a flower) until Mother’s Day.” He’s pretty much right. Keep an eye on night temperatures to be sure. Outdoor pond plants, also known as water plants that you, me, and the dragonflies are excited to place in the water, are arriving. What you see in our water plant for sale area is what has been determined to be in the clear. Don’t be too bummed because before you know it, we will all be complaining about how hot or humid it is. Next on the list of utmost awareness is filtration. It’s best to get ahead of this before the algae hits the fan. Nobody enjoys an algae takeover, but let’s be honest; any good ecosystem has a balance of green, mossy “algae” in the mix. Think of streams, wilderness waterfalls, hiking creeks, or rolling-hill ponds. It should be left alone unless it’s emerald green, which serves as a biofilm that provides various healthful benefits. If you’re done looking at the aftermath of winter’s effects on your pond or water feature, like observing a teen wearing dark clothing with hair overgrowing so much you can barely see their eyes, then you’re in the right place. We’re here to help get that grungy, unkempt look of shorter days under control. A pressure filter is the most helpful item needed to bring calm to your nervous system when owning a personal backyard retreat. The next addition to your medicinal arsenal is what we refer to as the heroes of water life. Beneficial bacteria (all the “good guys” taking out the “bad guys,” aka ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and organic debris such as dead leaves, uneaten fish food, fish waste, etc.) is your best friend or should be. Netting out any debris, like fallen leaves or residue floating, “not sure what that is, but it needs to go,” is a very good idea. If your water is super out of control, like the rocking lyrics of an 80s song sung by The Pointer Sisters, we have Barley Max (an organic solution for efficient pond cleaning all year long). Are you getting excited for the Spring season to kick off? Worst-case scenario, add Algae Stop, a natural antibiotic; this will make a statement. If you’re wondering when to do a deep clean, think April and May; otherwise, if you vacuum or deep clean too early, it could send your fish into PTSD. Any warmer months are fine for a thorough cleaning as long as you’re careful to add spa treatments of aeration and umbrella shade, which includes plant life. Whatever you do, please, and I repeat, do not add small rocks at the bottom of your water garden. Not only are they hard to get into the crevices, but they harbor toxicity, like narcissistic germs that don’t know when to leave you alone. Chlorine is never the solution, as this only stresses your fish and ecosystem. In the end, embrace the green in your water, stay the course by adding the good guys every two weeks, and grab yourself your favorite drink to enjoy while savoring those soothing sounds of water, whether it’s a pondless drilled rock water feature or a breathtaking, picturesque pond.
Cheers! Carie + Den
